BECK

THE MAN BEHIND THE BECK EFFECT

Greg Beckwith was more than just a basketball player. Affectionately known as “Beck,” he was a leader, mentor, driving force in the sporting goods industry, and his favorite title of all, a family man. Born on March 14, 1964, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, he embarked on a remarkable journey that left a lasting impact on his community and profession.

BASKETBALL

Beckwith's basketball journey began at the University of Richmond, where he played as a point guard from 1982 to 1986. Coming in at 5-10, he was viewed by some as too small to contribute at the Division I level. He quickly proved them wrong and was instrumental in leading the Spiders to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984, notably achieving an upset victory over Auburn and Charles Barkley in the opening round. His leadership on the court was further demonstrated when he guided the team to another NCAA Tournament berth in 1986. By the end of his collegiate career, Beckwith held the University of Richmond's records for career assists and steals, marks he maintained for over three decades. His exceptional contributions earned him two inductions into the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame. First in 2003 for his individual accomplishments. Then again in 2006 as part of the 1988 Men’s Basketball Team of Distinction; the first UR team to be nationally ranked in the top 20. In 2017 the Atlantic 10 inducted Greg into 2017 Atlantic 10 Legends Class; awarded to those who have made a lasting impact on their respective basketball programs and institutions.

CAREER

Following his playing career, Beckwith, holding a Bachelor's degree in economics and a Master's degree in Sports Management from the University of Richmond, embarked on a coaching path, serving as a graduate assistant at both Richmond and Virginia Tech. Settling down back in Richmond, he later became a beloved television and radio analyst for the Spiders' basketball broadcasts, a role he held for 21 years, providing insightful commentary and fostering a deeper connection between the team and its fans.

Beckwith's professional journey extended into the sporting goods industry, where he made significant contributions. He began his career with AJD Cap Company and Sports Specialties before joining Adidas in 1998. Over a 23-year tenure at Adidas, he ascended to the role of Sales Manager for the Eastern Region, playing a pivotal role in the company's growth and success; impacting many with his positivity along the way. In 2022, he joined S&S Activewear as an Account Executive, continuing to leverage his expertise to influence the industry.

Greg Beckwith's legacy is characterized by his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Whether on the basketball court, in the broadcast booth, or within the sporting goods industry, he left an indelible mark that continues to inspire those who knew him. His passing on May 24, 2024, at the age of 60, was a profound loss to his family, friends, and the broader community.
